Phony Rappers

With the current swirling of controversy surrounding rappers like Rick Ross, Plies and others, rappers are trying to pull their "hood" cards out. Just look at Maino:

What a complete idiot! I mean, you spent time in jail for a violent crime, why are you risking your freedom over ONE fan?

I mean, if anything have the goons take care of this.

On a more positive note, we just wrapped up new mixtapes with Q-Tip and Saigon.

So you can see how its working, check out the work from my main dude, Martin @ www.szomo.ca

LYRICS TO GO

I believe I have witnessed the greatest gathering of hip-hop artists on a tour, EVER!

Judging from how weight of my eyelids and less than stellar coordination today, I am feeling good about hip-hop. If you have a chance to go to the Rock The Bells concert, do it. And if its outside, spring for the seats. My people on the lawn were getting a nice bath all day.

Oh yeah, so i'm backstage and this dude comes up to Posdnous and says "Yo man, i really love tribe called quest. Yall did ya thing!" All this and even a tax-free dap from plug one without even smacking dude. Of course I had to verbally harass him with a correction, was he that nervous that he couldn't tell the two apart?

Do you think Reggaeton is corny?

I didn't...but Joe Budden did. Well probably not if he was on the back end of a nice lil mamacita...

But back to the hip-hop mystery for the ages...

I keep wondering who killed it? Joe is doing his usual low key dissin/real talk on here...peep it

Washington, DC - June 17, 2008

After completing one of the year's most phenomenal tours, the triad of Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and Pharell Williams
have settled into their own triangle offense. The trio have spurred on the creative powers of satellite radio's mixtape geniuses from both Sirius and XM. Rebel Music, a prototype audio masterpiece created by XM Satellite Radio's DJ Dub and Sirius Satellite Radio's Dub Floyd, puts the three MCs in a montage that has them gracing some of hip hop's most coveted soundscapes. Imagine Lupe Fiasco vs. Jeru Tha Damaja or Kanye West vs. Outkast? The trinity of Lupe, Kanye and Pharell have recorded 2 buzz tracks, "Everybody Noze Remix" and "Us Placers", both which added to the need for this mixtape.

Team 20/20 has teamed up previously to create the uber-street Sheek Louch mixtape, Animal Planet. With this being their second project, it only continues to show why both Dub and Dub Floyd have not only been recognized by the streets but also the industry and their peers. Both are multiple Justo Mixtape Awards nominees (Dub Floyd was recently awarded the Justo Award for 2008 Rookie of the Year), both are rising stars on their respective Satellite Radio outlets and both are dedicated to their craft.

Team 20/20 churned out more than thirty original remixes for this project as well underground freestyles and classics from the Child Rebel Soldiers.

"Lupe is the child, I'm the Rebel and Kanye's the soldier...this is our rebellion. When we rhyme together its fun to do...its like an ode to the the kind of hip hop we love and want to make and wasn't about money."

- Pharell Willams

"While everyone was looking for New York to bring real hip-hop back, they left the door open for these two kids from Chicago and another from Virginia Beach. Making this come to life with the help of (Dub) Floyd and N.E.R.D. was a integral part of this project's success"

-DJ Dub

"Working on Rebel Music with my homie DJ Dub was a great experience. Very fun & a breath of fresh air for the mixtape game. We're basically two minds that think alike & recognize that CRS is a talented supergroup!!!! "

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Oh just when you thought everything was clear and good...

From the NY Post.

October 17, 2007 -- Who says Barack Obama doesn't have what it takes to be president? Turns out, he's a distant cousin of both Dick Cheney and George Bush.

The vice president's wife, Lynne Cheney, announced her discovery yesterday while hawking her new book, "Blue Skies, No Fences," on MSNBC.

When asked if she would support Hillary Rodham Clinton because she is a woman, Lynne Cheney said, "I have to admit to a certain bias here . . . Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins."

Mrs. Cheney said that it was "an amazing American story that one ancestor . . . could be responsible down the family line for lives that have taken such different and varied paths."

Then asked if she supported Obama she quickly said, "No."

Obama's camp made light of the family ties. "Every family has a black sheep," said spokeswoman Jen Psaki, with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

The Chicago Sun-Times revealed the genealogical link in early September, claiming that the shared ancestors were Mareen and Susannah Duvall, 17th century immigrants from France.

The newspaper, however, claimed that the senator from Illinois and the vice president were 11th cousins.

The Duvalls are Obama's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents, and Cheney's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents, the paper said.

George W. Bush and Obama, meanwhile, are 10th cousins once removed - linked through a 17th century Massachusetts couple, Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soole, according to the Sun-Times.

REVERSE RACISM

Check me get deep with my quote about...NAS?!?!?!

Reverse Racism
DJs combine forces to present new mixtape

Washington, DC May 29th

As he gears up to release his ninth studio album, one of the most respected Hip-Hop narrators has encouraged the attention of three of the industries most recognized mixtape DJs. Reverse Racism, an aural dedication to the Queensbridge rapper, Nasir Jones has been put together by DJs Scream, Dub and Justo Award winner Furious Styles.

The tape which is available for free download is a testament to the man who has brought us classic albums such as Illmatic and Godson. Nas has since declaring Hip-Hop dead and tentatively titling his next album Nigger, encouraged debate within the board rooms of his label home, has incited opposition from the most revered Reverends and has fueled many a barbershop and street corner discussion.

The sheer ingenuity of his lyrical prowess and story telling has been molded into this epic collection of tracks by three of the hardest working DJs in the game. Aliging songs such as the Lauryn Hill assisted If I Ruled the World with the Salaam Remi produced Made You Look and War, this 32 track opus solidifies Nas's tenure and future in not just Hip-Hop but in addressing the attitudes and direction in which life evolves.

"You get to hear Nas's point of view from the perspective of 3 prominent DJ's that represent The North and the South. Nas's music has had an effect on anyone who loves hip hop regardless of gender, race and geographical location." --DJ Furious Styles

"This tape is crazy. Me, Dub and Styles went in. Its a historical ride through the career of one of the most influential hip-hop artists of our times" - DJ Scream

"We've had a chance to see Nas grow as an artist from Illmatic to now. Like all the unheralded greats, he's going through his share of adversity for making a social statement with his album title. The lynchings continue at the hands of the new overseers, the police. So to even give the man problems over his album title after similar album titles were released by NWA and Ol Dirty Bastard is ridiculous ." - DJ Dub

Friday Night Live

As I contemplate what I can do to fix some of mtrusted music equipment, I am reminded by smartassphone, the lovable crack berry, about an incident I had on a beautiful Friday night, not too long ago...read on...

Friday Night Live...

As I stand alongside my partner, Furious Styles rocking D.C.'s new hotspot Ibiza, I come to the realization that DC is just like anywhere else. C.R.E.A.M. rules only apply. I feel like I'm in some sort of derivative caste system, similar to India. If youre not familiar, it mirrors our "paper bag test" made famous by the Black Bourgeoisie movement of the 20th century. The fairer-skinned individuals receive precedence over those of a darker pigment. Me being chocolate-skinned, I have always been a little miffed at the attention people get JUST because of their pigment. Granted, I've dated all parts of the color spectrum and I find that beauty comes in all shades. But I still see remnants of the "divide and conquer" strategy made popular in the days of legal slavery. Dudes rocking the new "conk" aka Wave Nouveau to give the impression of having "good hair". Yes, people are still saying that shit in the year 2008. As long as dudes get their hair relaxed and girls hit up their local beauty shop for that Indian Silky weave, we will be at the mercy of our shallow perceptions. The launching of a fashion line helmed by actor Boris Kodjoe, has taken the limelight away from the hard working DJ to put it on knee-high boots, peach-colored lining of suits and braggart lines of Egyptian Cotton. Me personally, I am not enthralled by metrosexual men wearing $3000 suits. I like what people like Boris are doing, making Black owned-clothing but at that pricepoint, who can afford that? Rent is due, phone is about to cut off, and I'm not thinking about my $200 shirt. I can admit, I took part in the middle-class meandering of my teen years: being a part of Jack and Jill, pseudo-worship of the Cosby Show and attendance of Morehouse College for my secondary level of education. Yes, I contributed to the ideal of the middle-class and how the presence of the "talented tenth" can help save out people. Granted, the notion of the tenth is platformed ideal which has never really come to fruition. 100 Black Men clubs across the nation have piqued the interest of their respective communities and have made some impact but haven't really made the type of impact that I think they were expected to. So as we sit and enjoy pollo brasa or fried chicken with waffles, we are reminded of the upward struggle of our forefathers and how much hasn't changed in over 100 years. Thanks Lincoln. Thanks Martin. Thanks Malcolm. We miss you and thank you eternally but we are still royally fucked up out here.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

video.vh1.com

Okay...one of the best magazines that doesn't exist anymore has struck gold again!
Ego Trip's newest invention is the race for the next female MC. While there are plently of FemCs out there, lately they do seem to be a little troubled. Kicking it off, Serch and a very grown & sexy Yo-Yo pick the top 10 MCs. By not picking Hedonis Da Amazon, she leaked a Yo-Yo diss record the night of the show's premiere. Let's just say that I wasn't moved but hey, Hedonis is like 6 foot plus so I'm sure she may have scared somebody into liking her record.

There's the typical personality clashes, mostly revolving around the shows 2 elder stateswomen, Nicky2states and Khia. Why is Khia on there? Most likely to try to get her long-gone buzz back, maybe to get some money to buy more supportive bras, maybe to rekindle her beef with Trina. Who knows? But it does make for good drama. And of course, with a house full of women, there's bound to be some lezzy action. First episode already has some truth or dare smooching going on. Will we see some nightvision humpin around? Who knows, stay close to your tivo remote.

Tune in next time to see who had me in stitches this past Sunday!!!

Why you think me and Dame cool???

Of course with another night of providing the night's soundtrack under the belt, there is always a problem. First off the place in question is located in a "trendy" part of town. Not trendy like neon dunks and skateboards. More like dudes holding hands. So of course I didn't really know that before I got there. So of course, I roll in the spot with my boy, Versace shades and a linen pink shirt on. I know, I know...totally not on purpose. I like pastels, they look good on the kid. So anyway, I arrive and there's no one there, like nobody. The bartender and some dude who keeps introducing himself as "Dan The Man". I'm like, "okay...dude you already introduced yourself twice!" So I get to the DJ booth and it looks like its all love. The club owner bum rushes us in the booth and starts ranting about "dont break my equipment! Its very expensive! Do you know what youre doing?" At first I was about to fire dude up but I didn't want to start off a potential new gig by flying this bumbo's head. Luckily my boy Furious Styles was there to buffer the situation and get me the shot of Patron to help bring me back down. Where there's a way to go wrong, God usually likes to see if I can overcome it. This day he did! They have a mixer there worth about $1400 that already has Serato built into it and I'm gassed! I plug the USB cable into my laptop and next thing you know, my laptop is freaking out looking for drivers and what not. Good thing that I brought my own SL box or else, it would've been me doing my best Movado-Hova-Rick Ross-Lil Wayne impressions all night with Furious on the beatbox. So after routing outside of the mixer then I find out that both of the mixer's headphones jacks are not functioning. This is a $1400 brand new mixer that some drunk clod prematurely pulled his headphones out of and basically rendered one of its most vital functions useless. So this is one of the few times I really am glad Serato was around because I can always try to mix by eyeballing the wave shapes. That worked for like 30 seconds, it was probably best that no one was there. I sounded so disjointed. Reggae set was decent though, riddims line up right with each other. But of course I was playing for a few friends and the bartender it was terrible. Maybe I'll be back again, maybe not...we shall see. In the meantime, check out this nutty shit.

FTP

Aight...i am really tired from going through alot of hassle I think I could have easily avoided. Either way, long story short I get pulled over for a rolling stop. Get arrested for an unpaid fee and of course spend that unsettling night in jail. Even worse they put me through the 3 ring circus to get my whip back. Then 2 days after I get it back, I catch a major flat on i-95 and my spare is useless. Who invented donuts? I want a full size tire!!!

Anyway, I had to put this up...this gave me the laugh i needed today. Maybe you'll chuckle too.

Wrestlemania what???

I remember being a tike staying up late on Saturday nights to watch the likes of Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Brutus the barber, The Hart Foundation, Coco B Ware and more slug it out (or at least so it seemed) on NBC. The last minute roll aways as Ricky The Dragon Steamboat leapt from the top turnbuckle would wrench my gut when bad guys like Iron Sheik and Nikita Koloff would cheat their way to another W. While I know now that it was all a clever rouse, the drama that it stirred inside of me and millions of kids and adults across the nation drove me to buy the toys, order the pay-per-view events (even when Moms wasn't havin it, i had to freak the old cable box knob) and even go to the big arena shows. Once my dad even took me backstage at one of these joints and I see "rivals" chumming it up, dirtiest of foes on the phone to their families thus totally blowing my mind in what was possible in the world of show business.

I say all of this because I'm trying to figure out how much of this Fat Joe vs 50 Cent is real. I am quite sure that these dudes do NOT like each other. 50 Cent being the powerful force he is in the industry has once again set his sights on bringing down the fat gangster's album release date. I personally enjoy the music that Papoose and Remy Martin make and the fact that they pull NO punches (serious pun right there, What up PUN???). Pap has a serious allegiance to Slay but Fat Joe seems to have a problem with DJs who have 50 on their show. I mean, Fat Joe, lets keep it real. You haven't had a gold record in a LONG time. So why I am going to hold up the star power of the G-Unit General because you don't like him? I think Kay Slay said it best at a convention I recently attended, "Don't get mad at me, I'm just the referee". What kind of hater puts a clause in your contract saying you can't work with THEIR rival? Thats hate right there. I'm sure Remy will be working with G-G-G-G-G-Unit in no time. Personally, homegirl is one of the hardest in the game. Kim needs to chill out, the plastic surgery and diva stylings are great for the Style network but suck in the hood. I don't even recognize Kim anymore. Remy said she looks like a little Japanese boy (LOL). I want new albums from Papoose (enough mixtapes already dude, I know you do it to stay current but an album is needed brother!) and Remy Ma (maybe one day we can burn it down...LOL) ASAP!!!

Last time Fif went on his media tirade about the "comeback" of Ja Rule it seemed effective. Despite Irv Gotti's subpar VH1 reality show's attempt to garner interest in Ja's new album, 50 really put it in people's minds why he shut him down in the first place. Is Ja doomed to do direct-to-DVD movies for life? LOL. For a while, I thought 50 was slipping. Then he came with "I Get Money" and it was back to the familiar G-Unit swagger. With the popularity of the internet and downloading, his new mixtape (Elephant In The Sand) should be a sure-fire winner for the Unit.

And if you're wondering when you're going to get Style & Grace 5, Shine 3 and Animal Planet hold tight for about 2 days.

Thanks to the Rose...

Aight...so of course I was talking about the pitfalls of drinking as opposed to other things and of course drinking was a loser. But lo and behold, here come those bottles of Moet Rose one after another! What do you do? Drink up or continue to wait for "your guy" (who is usually unavailable when you need him)? Well, this DJ, he gets down...man, wayyyyyy down. Like I had NO idea that the bubbly was so powerful and sneaky. At least with bar drinks & brews, you have a standing count of whats been ingested. Needless to say, the Dubster is going to take a break from the bubbly and its back to my Red Bull and Cranberry jump off.

If you're reading this and wondering what does this have to do with the mixtape covers, it has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH IT. Without the drunkeness, I would have nothing to refer to (the lows help you appreciate the highs).

These should be impacting shortly...Style & Grace 5 / Animal Planet on the streets in no time!!!

Big shout to the homies Cons and Sheek...

Get Derrrrrrrty

Aight...you know what it is...y'all boy is in St. Louis for a DJ Convention and am appreciating the chance to get to network with my peers...big shout to the homey Neves all the way from South Africa (he said its like L.A...who woulda thought?)

Anyway, having not been in the midwest in several years, i forgot how cheap it can be! Can you say bottles of Moet Rose for $100 at the club? Wow. I'm not even a champagne drinker like that but you know its always interesting to compare it to the $300-400 mark seen in Metro DC. One thing I will say is that the area out here is still intact, gold teeth, lots of locks and even a sighting of Murphy Lee last night. Big shout to the homey Jus Bleezy for having us out...now its back to business!!!

Flashing Lights...

This has been a nutsy week...kickin things off we had the Grammys.
Quick recap:

alicia = grammy posterchild
WOW...MORRIS DAY AND JEROME!?!?!? ADD RIHANNA...POW!

Kanye performs, shuts it down with some Tron-ish effects and pops in the goodness of Daft Punk's remixing megaton power pyramid...since the Grammys were all about collaborations and paying homage, what better than bring out the sampled artist?
Shed a tear for the Hey Mama remix...

Kanye wins best rap album and shuts the wrapitup music off...you're home buddy!

I like Feist (Apple got me hip, I'm sad to say).

Why is jay acting up with this collaboration award? Rihanna can talk...or just not in front of B?

Since Amy Winehouse is BANNED in the US, she came live from London...and why are her dancers working out so hard? Rehab took on a new meaning when she sang it...I mean damn, didnt we see her smoking crack or meth a couple weeks ago? Hey if Marion Barry can get re-elected after his scandal...song of the year, hands down!

will i am...i appreciate what he was trying to do but doesnt he seem to go over peoples heads??? Or just borderline corny? (you tell me!)

The grammys fucked up everybody with giving it to Herbie Hancock...is Kanye gonna badmouth/interrupt Herbie with Quincy on the stage? i think not. Foo fighters, maybe.

Leave the Gloves alone

Aight...its Thursday...the media is talking about the presidential candidates taking their gloves off, I guess meaning that they will be smacking each other with their policies??? Well, I think the only reason they need to take the gloves off is to eat fried chicken or show off those pro nails. CHeck out Kid SIster's new video for Pro Nails...true true true stylin...Fashion Geek, I'm on my way to the Chi...WORD to the duck.

Airports suck but I like Maya Rudolph

Big shout out to everybody checking in on the Special Holiday editions of Ridin Big Radio on XM Satellite Radio and Music Choice. While I was at home enjoying some home cooking from Ma Dukes, I of course got a chance to ride through the old neighborhood, see who's married, knocked up or locked up. Of course gentrification is still even impacting places like Upstate New York, places where white people would never even think about living, where they used to be afraid of going to after dark are now housing remixed neighborhoods. Its all over the place, no matter where...but thats NOT why I'm writing this. I'm writing this blog to tell you about the future. Okay, Negrodamus I am not but I saw a movie that tugs at the slightest chance of possibly occurring. Imagine a world where water has been replaced by a sports drink (it has electrolytes!), a UFC fighter is the president, and after years of producing students with low reading and math comprehension levels the world has been dumbed down to the point of idiocracy. Does this sound crazy? I thought so as well but a glimpse into our possible future definitely caught my attention. Owen Wilson and Maya Rudolph (who is looking extremely hotter than usual, SNL whats up?) carry this as two people who were cryogenically frozen 500 years prior and wake up in this land of half-wits. Watching that Season 3 of the Wire on a personal marathon (taking the occasional break to check Maury cause you are NOT the father) reminded me of the lowering standards being put in place all over the country. I personally can't imagine skipping school as an elementary school student. Growing up with a teacher and a cop (mom and dad respectively) in the household probably encouraged my straight ways, at least at that point in time. Even high school, I think I skipped school to play hookey like maybe 3 times in that entire 4-year period (all of my friends were in school!). I was so interested in my own education, or at least being in the learning environment, I shadowed friends' schools for a day to hang out and go to their classes. I know I am painting this whole diatribe as if I am the model student but is that so wrong? I say all of this to really lead into my point about music. The level of education and overall feelings towards education had a profound effect on the music climate. Lets think about the 90s: Malcolm X's biography was in every other hand, Black College awareness was up and people even thought about the concept of knowledge of self. What are people interested in now: busting a quick one, super soaking that hoe (yes the song is about sex, you didn't know?), flossing hard? Instantaneous gratification has spoiled everyone: the internet can link you to a sex buddy in 10 minutes, make your song available to billions worldwide and let everyone see how ignorant you really on video. Let me say it, I enjoy technology and I always have. I remember when computers had 5 1/4" floppy disks, Apple IIc's were the shit, and Texas Instruments had actual cassette recorders for their data backup. Why am I talking about all of this? I would love for the world to take a turn for the better in 2008. I would love for half of the money being used to research erectile dysfunction and baldness to be used to cure Sickle Cell or raise the literacy level here in the United States. Am I a dreamer? See, what happens if some shit like "I Am Legend" happens from trying to cure something? Oh were screwed either way so cop the Lupe and hope for the best.
